Analyse des petits pelagiques, sardine et anchois, dans le golfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Coiffec, Gaelle; Duhamel, Erwan; Biseau, Alain; Danzart, Marc.
Since 1993 the yearly amounts of sardine landings for the Bay of Biscay fishing ports have experienced a constant increase (10,000 tonnes in 1993); on that account sardine is the first species landed in the fishing ports of the Bay of Biscay (15,000 tonnes in 2003). It is sold 0.54 € / kg (constant price over ten years) which means a 8,100 k€ turnover in 2003 and the 12th rank in value landed in the fishing ports of Bay of Biscay. Though anchovy landings have decreased over the last ten years, especially since 2001, this species occupies the 3rd rank of the highest landings (7,300 tonnes) of the Atlantic shoreline in 2003.The decrease of anchovy landings over the last ten years may account for the high increase of its constant sale price of 1.5 € / kg from...

Analysing Temporal Variability in Spatial Distributions Using Min–Max Autocorrelation Factors: Sardine Eggs in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Petitgas, Pierre; Renard, Didier; Desassis, Nicolas; Huret, Martin; Romagnan, Jean-baptiste; Doray, Mathieu; Woillez, Mathieu; Rivoirard, Jacques.
This paper presents a novel application of the geostatistical multivariate method known as min–max autocorrelation factors (MAFs) for analysing fisheries survey data in a space–time context. The method was used to map essential fish habitats and evaluate the variability in time of their occupancy. Research surveys at sea on marine fish stocks have been undertaken for several decades now. The data are time series of yearly maps of fish density, making it possible to analyse the space–time variability in fish spatial distributions. Space–time models are key to addressing conservation issues requiring the characterization of variability in habitat maps over time. Here, the variability in fisheries survey data series is decomposed in space and time to address...

Body reserves mediate trade-offs between life-history traits: new insights from small pelagic fish reproduction ArchiMer
Brosset, Pablo; Lloret, Josep; Munoz, Marta; Fauvel, Christian; Van Beveren, Elisabeth; Marques, Virginie; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Menard, Frederic; Saraux, Claire.
Limited resources in the environment prevent individuals from simultaneously maximizing all life-history traits, resulting in trade-offs. In particular, the cost of reproduction is well known to negatively affect energy investment in growth and maintenance. Here, we investigated these trade-offs during contrasting periods of high versus low fish size and body condition (before/after 2008) in the Gulf of Lions. Female reproductive allocation and performance in anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus) were examined based on morphometric historical data from the 1970s and from 2003 to 2015. Additionally, potential maternal effects on egg quantity and quality were examined in 2014/2015. After 2008, the gonadosomatic index increased for...

Comparison of airborne lidar with echosounders: a case study in the coastal Atlantic waters of southern Europe ArchiMer
Carrera, Pablo; Churnside, J.h.; Boyra, G; Marques, V; Scalabrin, Carla; Uriarte, A.
The feasibility of using airborne lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) was studied to assess the early juvenile fractions of the main pelagic fish species of the coastal Atlantic waters of southern Europe (anchovy, sardine, mackerel, and horse mackerel). Field comparisons with more established echosounder methods were undertaken in the summers of 1998 and 1999 during the recruitment period of sardine and anchovy in the selected areas, in the presence of a variety of oceanographic and environmental conditions. Backscattered energies as well as the types of target recorded by both devices were compared. The distributions of energies and the shape of the targets were generally similar for both techniques, with moderate numerical correlation between sensors,...

De l'utilisation de protéases industrielles pour la production de sauces de poisson ArchiMer
Le, Minh Chau.
Fish sauces are traditionally used in most Asian countries. Whatever the process, the principle is the same i.e. a fish autolysis in saline media followed by a fermentation step. Not less than 18 months are needed to obtain a brown liquid rich in salt and amino acids. This PhD work aims to determine if an addition of proteases can speed up the process while keeping the nutritional and sensorial properties. The first chapter presents the characteristics of fish sauces and the key parameters of the processes used. In the second chapter, several industrial proteases are compared each other for their capacity to liquefy the fishes in hyper saline conditions. Kinetics of proteolysis and biochemical characteristics of the resulting hydrolysates are established...

Density dependence in the spatial behaviour of anchovy and sardine across Mediterranean systems ArchiMer
Giannoulaki, Marianna; Petitgas, Pierre; Barra, Marco; Tugores, Pilar; Vasapollo, C.; Iglesias, M.; Leonori, Iole; De Felice, Andrea; Bonanno, A.; Basilone, G.; Mazzola, Salvatore; Bigot, Jean-louis; Machias, Athanassios; Pyrounaki, Maria M..
A spatial indicator—the spreading area index—is used to describe anchovy and sardine spatial distribution in relation to biomass variation and to look for ecosystem differences within the Mediterranean basin. Specifically, the variation in the spreading area index in relation to biomass was examined for different areas of the Mediterranean Sea (i.e. Aegean Sea, western Adriatic Sea, Strait of Sicily, Gulf of Lion, and Spanish Mediterranean waters). In order to capture the spatial variability of the population at different levels of fish density, acoustic survey data for the years of highest, lowest, and intermediate abundance were used. In a subsequent step standardized values of spreading area and biomass were estimated to allow comparisons. Results...

Enzymatic hydrolysis of cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus) viscera using commercial proteases: Effects on lipid distribution and amino acid composition ArchiMer
Kechaou, Emna; Durnay, Justine; Donnay-moreno, Claire; Jaouen, Pascal; Gouygou, Jean-paul; Berge, Jean-pascal; Ben Arnar, Raja.
Total lipid and phospholipid recovery as well as amino acid quality and composition from cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus) were compared. Enzymatic hydrolyses were performed using the three proteases Protamex, Alcalase, and Flavourzyme by the pH-stat method (24 h, pH 8, 50 degrees C). Three fractions were generated: an insoluble sludge, a soluble aqueous phase, and an oily phase. For each fraction, lipids, phospholipids, and proteins were quantified. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of the raw material and hydrolysates were performed. The degree of hydrolysis (DH) for cuttlefish viscera was 3.2% using Protamex, 6.8% using Flavourzyme, and 7% using Alcalase. DH for sardine viscera was 1.9% (using Flavourzyme), 3.1% (using...

Évolution de l'écosystème pélagique du Golfe de Gascogne pendant la période 1990-2003. Conséquences sur la capturabilité des espèces ArchiMer
Villalobos, Hector.
Several small pelagic fish species contribute remarkably to world catch. Their populations are, however, characterized by large biomass fluctuations strongly affecting fisheries. The fishing gears and methods used to capture small pelagics have evolved to exploit the highly developed shoaling behavior of these species. Hence, faced to modern fishing this gregarious behavior becomes a disadvantage for fish. Fish behavior may be affected by environmental conditions and by fishing, at the same time that behavior impacts fishing. In this study, we seek to characterize the aggregative systems of small pelagic fishes inhabiting the Bay of Biscay by analyzing "acoustic images", defined as the group of echoes (planktonic layers, shoals, isolated targets) detected...

Historical fluctuations in spawning location of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus) in the Bay of Biscay during 1967-73 and 2000-2004 ArchiMer
Bellier, Edwige; Planque, Benjamin; Petitgas, Pierre.
The spatial extent of small pelagic fish spawning habitat is influenced by environmental factors and by the state of the adult population. In return, the configuration of spawning habitat affects recruitment and therefore the future structure of the adult population. Interannual changes in spatial patterns of spawning reflect variations in adult population structures and their environment. The present study describes the historical changes in the spatial distribution of spawning of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus) in the Bay of Biscay during two periods: 1967-72 and 2000-2004. Using data from egg surveys conducted in spring, the spatial distributions of anchovy and sardine eggs are characterized by means of geostatistics....

Improvement of lipid and phospholipid recoveries from sardine (Sardina pilchardus) viscera using industrial proteases ArchiMer
Dumay, Justine; Donnay-moreno, Claire; Barnathan, G; Jaouen, P; Berge, Jean-pascal.
Enzymatic hydrolysis of sardine viscera by three broad spectrum proteases was investigated using the pHstat method (24 h, pH 8, 50 degrees C). After hydrolysis, three fractions (sludge, aqueous phase and oily phase) were collected. For each fraction, lipids and phospholipids were quantified and molecular weights of aqueous phase peptides were determined. Under these conditions, the degree of hydrolysis (DH) varied from 1.9% (Flavourzyme), 3.1% (Protamex) and to 3.3% (Alcalase). Dry matter distribution indicated that all hydrolysis performed increased solubilisation of proteins: protein recovery for each hydrolysis ranged from 57.4% to 61.2%. Furthermore, the total lipid content in the liquid parts (oily and aqueous phases) increased (at least 85% of lipids...

Influence of environmental variability and age on the body condition of small pelagic fish in the Gulf of Lions ArchiMer
Brosset, Pablo; Menard, Frederic; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Ulses, Caroline; Bourdeix, Jean-herve; Bigot, Jean-louis; Van Beveren, Elisabeth; Roos, David; Saraux, Claire.
Endogenous and environmental variables are fundamental in explaining variations in fish condition. Based on more than 20 yr of fish weight and length data, relative condition indices were computed for anchovy and sardine caught in the Gulf of Lions. Classification and regression trees (CART) were used to identify endogenous factors affecting fish condition, and to group years of similar condition. Both species showed a similar annual cycle with condition being minimal in February and maximal in July. CART identified 3 groups of years where the fish populations generally showed poor, average and good condition and within which condition differed between age classes but not according to sex. In particular, during the period of poor condition (mostly recent...

Razafimahefa, N.; Champetier de Ribes, G.; Ranoivoson, G.; Rasolofonirina, R.N.; Rakotoson, J.D.; Rabeson, D..
If seafood poisonings are well documented in the Pacific region, they are not often reported in the Indian Ocean. In Madagascar, fishermen and people living in coastal areas are traditionally aware of seafood poi - sonings . Mass intoxications were described in the sixties, including lethal cases following sardine ingestion. From 1989 to 1993, 28 ichtyosarcotoxism cases, mainly ciguatera occurring in children, were reported in Tulear hospital . From July 1993 to May 1996, nine seafood poisoning outbreaks occurred in coastal villages after turtle, shark and sardine meals. Clinical symptoms were related to marine toxins. For turtle intoxications, gastro-intestinal symptoms are the most frequently seen (acute stomatitis, dysphagia, vomiting and diarrhea) ,...

Linking small pelagic dietary shifts with ecosystem changes in the Gulf of Lions ArchiMer
Brosset, Pablo; Le Bourg, Baptiste; Costalago, David; Banaru, Daniela; Van Beveren, Elisabeth; Bourdeix, Jean-herve; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Menard, Frederic; Saraux, Claire.
Since 2008, a severe decrease in size and body condition together with a demographic truncation has been observed in the sardine (secondarily in anchovy) population of the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean Sea). In parallel, sprat biomass, which was negligible before, has increased tenfold. All of these changes have strongly affected the regional fisheries. Using trophic and isotopic data from contrasting periods of low versus high growth and condition, we investigated potential changes in diet and interspecific feeding interactions through time. Evidence of resource partitioning was found between sprat and both anchovy and sardine in 2004 and 2005. Since 2010, the isotopic niches of the 3 species have tended to overlap, suggesting higher risk of competition...

Long-term, Ecosystem-Scale Changes in the Southern Benguela Marine Pelagic Social-Ecological System: Interaction of Natural and Human Drivers Ecology and Society

South Africa's small pelagics fishery is currently the largest in volume and second largest in value in the southern Benguela. It exploits short-lived, small pelagic fishes such as anchovy (for reduction into fish meal and oil) and sardine (for reduction as well as human consumption through canned products), and to a lesser extent redeye round herring and mesopelagics, largely for reduction. We explore the recent history (1940s to present) of the social-ecological system around this fishery. The natural subsystem, at the scales of the ocean environment and the ecosystem, is characterized by high interannual and documented decadal-scale variability. We characterize the human social subsystem at the scales of the fishing industry, legislation, and west...

As condition is a key variable in population dynamics (especially for survival, growth and reproduction), the use of well-defined and accurate fish condition indices is capital. In particular, condition indices (morphometric, bioenergetic and biochemical) have never been compared and validated for the European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus, the European pilchard Sardina pilchardus and the European sprat Sprattus sprattus. The accuracy of two indirect methods, the morphometric relative condition index Kn and the bioenergetics index determined with the Distell Fish Fatmeter was investigated by comparing with a direct measure of relative lipid content carried out with a thin layer chromatography-flame ionization detector. Modelling potential spawning habitat of sardine (Sardina pilchardus) and anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Planque, Benjamin; Bellier, Edwige; Lazure, Pascal.
Large amplitude variations in recruitment of small pelagic fish result from interactions between a fluctuating environment and population dynamics processes such as spawning. The spatial extent and location of spawning, which is critical to the fate of eggs and larvae, can vary strongly from year to year, as a result of changing population structure and environmental conditions. Spawning habitat can be divided into 'potential spawning habitat', defined as habitat where the hydrographic conditions are suitable for spawning, 'realized spawning habitat', defined as habitat where spawning actually occurs, and 'successful spawning habitat', defined as habitat from where successful recruitment has resulted. Using biological data collected during the period...

One-dimensional biophysical modelling of fish egg vertical distributions in shelf seas ArchiMer
Petitgas, Pierre; Magri Hoeltzener, Stephanie; Lazure, Pascal.
Modelling the vertical distribution of fish eggs is important when assessing fish stocks with egg production methods and for monitoring the reproductive potential of fish populations. Fish eggs are passive particles and their vertical distribution is determined by a few parameters such as egg density, egg diameter, wind- and tide-induced turbulence, and vertical hydrographic structure. A one-dimensional vertical biophysical, numerical model was developed which was adapted to the hydrography of shelf seas under the influence of tidal currents, wind-induced circulation, and river discharges. The biological part of the model parameterized the ascent velocity of the egg as a function of egg properties (diameter, density) and water properties (density,...

Optimisation of liquor yield during the hydraulic pressing of sardine (Sardina pilchardus) discards ArchiMer
Perez-galvez, Raul; Chopin, Christine; Mastail, Max; Ragon, Jean-yves; Guadix, Antonio; Berge, Jean-pascal.
Fresh sardine (employed as discard model species) was pressed with a hydraulic press in order to obtain a partially dewatered cake (whose volume represents between 55% and 60% of the initial Volume of raw material) and a 3-phase press liquor comprising an aqueous fraction, an oil fraction and a variable amount of suspended solids. Pressing conditions, such as final pressure to which the sardine was subjected, compression speed, number of pressing stages and time of relaxation between two consecutive pressing stages, were optimised by means of a statistically designed experiment. The goal of the optimisation problem was to achieve maximal yield of press liquor with a minimum load of suspended solids. The Suspended solid content in the press liquor Must be...

Optimization of hydrolysis of sardine (Sardina pilchardus) heads with Protamex: enhancement of lipid and phospholipid extraction ArchiMer
Dumay, Justine; Allery, Marion; Donnay-moreno, Claire; Barnathan, Gilles; Jaouen, Pascal; Carbonneau, Marie Elise; Berge, Jean-pascal.
BACKGROUND: Fish by-products are not considered as valuable raw materials even if they usually contain valuable components such as lipids. Fish lipids are well known for their nutritional potential and health effects but their extraction remains problematic due to the use of organic solvents. Enzymatic hydrolysis such as the proteolysis of tissues can lead to lipid extraction. RESULTS: Hydrolysis of sardine heads by Protamex was studied (temperature, hydrolysis time and enzyme-substrate ratio) using response surface methodology in order to obtain the highest release of lipids and particularly phospholipids. No relation between the degree of hydrolysis and lipid recovery were depicted; however, optimum conditions for both the release of lipids and...
